Collocational Properties of Adpositions in Nepali and English

چکیده
This paper presents the results of a preliminary investigation into the use of statistical collocation as a method for discovering characteristic properties of grammatical classes (i.e. part-of-speech categories such as noun, adjective, verb, and so on). In particular, the focus of the current investigation is the collocational patterns found around adpositions in English and Nepali. The claim that will be made on the basis of the findings presented here is twofold. Firstly, two primary collocational patterns characterise the category of adposition in English and Nepali. Secondly, these patterns are observable on different adpositions to different degrees. This claim is illustrated with reference to detailed discussion of a subset of the most frequent adpositions in English and Nepali. The paper is organised as follows. §2 presents an overview of the theoretical background to the “quantitative-distributional” method followed here. The method itself, and the data to which it will here be applied, are then detailed (§3). The collocations found for the adpositions under investigation, and a discussion of the patterns that can be detected among those collocations, are presented in §4 (English data) and §5 (Nepali data). The paper concludes with a discussion of these findings (§6) and some comments on possible further developments of this research (§7).

Collocational patterning in cross-linguistic perspective: adpositions in English, Nepali, and Russian
This paper presents a contrastive analysis of adpositions in English, Nepali and Russian corpora. Two sets of highly frequent adpositions, those with broadly locative and broadly ablative meaning, are contrasted. The ‘quantitative-distributional’ analysis is based on identifying patterns across the most statistically significant collocations of the words in question; it is undertaken using 1 mi...
متن کاملThe Problem of English Spatial, Non-spatial and Idiomatic Adpositions in Iranian EFL Environment: A Prototypical Approach
Several studies of L2 learners’ interlanguage have addressed the complexity of the English adpositional system due to several reasons like L1 transfer, lack of knowledge in L2 and the strong collocational relations of prepositions with other elements of the English language. The major purpose of the present study is to evaluate the performance of Iranian students in dealing with three broad cat...

The current study is an attempt to investigate the impact of decision-making (selecting and matching) tasks and production (creation of sentences and completion of sentences) tasks on the collocational knowledge of Iranian intermediate EFL learners. To this end, sixty EFL learners were divided into two experimental (decision-making and production) groups. To determine the effects of the tasks, ...

متن کاملEstablishing an Argument-Based Validity Approach for a Low-Stake Test of Collocational Behavior
Most of the validation studies conducted across varying test application contexts are usually framed within the traditional conceptualization of validity and therefore lack a comprehensive framework to focus on test score interpretations and test score use. This study aimed at developing and validating a collocational behavior test (CBT), drawing on Kane's argument-based approach to validity. F...
